Fan Fiction
Years 7 - 8
Three Week workshops
In this workshop students will delve into fan fiction, stories written inspired by mish-mashing characters, plotlines and worlds of books, movies, shows and comics that they are fans of.
Students will pay homage to the stories and characters they are fans of by using their narrative elements, including styles, tones and events to craft original stories set in established universes. The writing tasks for each workshop are loosely scaffolded, closely following common fanfiction tropes: storytelling through social media vignettes, six-step plot structure and whack fiction where the improbable plays out. Students will engage with their personal interests and draw from their favourite media to strengthen their writing skills and confidence.

The World’s Greatest Wrestling Match (excerpt)
It was round one, the crowd was roaring. The Rock strode out into the stadium, the people in the stands going wild. He had come out of wrestling retirement in response to a direct challenge from John Cena. Tonight, they would face off in the greatest battle ever recorded. He climbed into the ring, muscles bulging and gleaming after being rubbed in oil. John Cena also looked quite formidable, being an ex-wrestler. The whistle blew and they began circling.
“I’m going to have to get him down quickly,” thought Dwayne, “Get him on the ground and defenceless. A tackle should work.” He powered forward, driving his shoulder into John Cena’s thighs. But John Cena wasn’t there. He was faster on his feet than he looked. He got tangled in the ropes and John Cena grabbed him and started squeezing. Stuck in an awkward position, he couldn’t fight back. He eventually extracted himself and shoved John Cena away.
They stopped and Dwayne got some water and caught his breath. John Cena must have trained up, he was good. The bell dinged and they went back to it. Dwayne decided to use brute strength. He knew he was stronger than John Cena. He advanced slowly and John Cena copied. He grabbed John Cena’s arms, who likewise responded. He started shoving with all his might but John Cena was more like a rock than he was. John Cena, suddenly akin to a pillar of stone was impossible to force over. Then John Cena brought his full strength to bear. Dwayne felt his muscles straining and failing to stop the epitome of might that was John Cena. John Cena forced him to his knees, crushing down upon his back. Dwayne gasped in exertion, determined not to be forced to the floor where he would be eliminated. He held on until the bell finally signalled the end of the round.
Dwayne was sweating heavily, he greedily gulped down the contents of the proffered water bottle. He had barely recovered before the bell dinged for round three…..
