Flash Fiction
Years 9 - 10
Three Week workshops
In this series students will plan, write and edit a suite of very short short stories, also known as flash fiction, to be published in a class anthology. Flash fiction provides young writers with a short, flexible medium to investigate story structure, characterisation and creatively engage with the mechanics of writing. Students will examine examples of flash fiction, brainstorm and experiment with their own flash fiction and reflect on the creative writing process. They will be introduced to different types of flash fiction, from six word stories, hint fiction, prose poetry and a yarn. Students will gain confidence in experimenting with spoken language, hyperbole, metaphors and similes.
This workshop encourages students to complete a variety of writing tasks designed to develop their skills in writing succinctly and persuasively, in editing and building engaging characters.

Hello everyone, this G’etikwa the Sphinx.
This creature is looking for a new home and family to live their best life together with. G’etikwa is a highly intelligent individual, with a natural urge to protect. Sphinxes love to guard valuables and G’etikwa will get bored without a purpose. G’etikwa is strong and honourable, perfect for keeping out bandits. G’etikwa is super smart and requires lots of mental stimulation. She likes playing mind and word games, puzzles, and literature. Unfortunately, if she doesn’t challenge her brain enough she may attempt to toy with those she is supposed to be keeping out. Being honourable, if they best her in games of intelligence, such as riddles, she will allow intruders to pass.
She prefers hot, dry climates, and enjoys being underground. She doesn’t need to eat or exercise, making her a great companion for limited space and costs.
